Entrance
Once through the hotel gates, guests descend on the entrance as Romans would have done to be welcomed by an important family. The rather angular look of the tall building is countered by the warmth of its arresting burnt sienna colour. The immediate response is to linger and enjoy the tranquillity of the spot particularly when you notice the tables and chair invitingly placed beneath small palms.
The contrast between austere and welcoming is again evident in the reception area. Here dark granite frames the doors, the lift and the heavy mantle of the fireplace but the effect is softened by comfortable leather settees, fresh flowers on the table and painted flowers on the ceiling. Guests book in at a desk not a counter and with only 21 rooms the service tends to be more personalised.
The rooms
These are arranged on three floors and all conform to a traditional understated grandeur with dark wood floors, beige walls, bureau and heavy curtains. The only embellishment is the wooden canopy framing the bed head which is painted silver. Tall windows allow the light to flood in without disturbing guests’ privacy. The ensuite bathrooms are decorated with mica-flecked anthracite tiles and coloured patterned tiles.
