The Place du Palais Bourbon is an amazing setting. An island of calm right in the centre of the city, it looks like a pretty provincial square. Surrounded by wide pavements, a brasserie with a terrace that’s ideal for sunny days, a few elegant shops, and the harmonious architecture of the National Assembly building, you could almost forget you are in Paris.

And yet, as soon as you step outside this sanctuary of calm, there is the Esplanade des Invalides on one side, with its glints of gold, and on the other side you come straight out at the Pont de la Concorde. The bridge offers one of the best views in Paris: in front of you is the Place de la Concorde, broad and buzzing with life, with a glimpse of the columns of the Madeleine church at the end of the Rue Royale; to the left is the domed glass roof of the Grand Palais; on your right are the trees of the Tuileries gardens, and in the distance the crowning glory of the Sacré Cœur.

Surrounded by ministries and embassies, interior decorators’ boutiques and plenty of restaurants, the neighbourhood is buzzing with people during the week, but seems to come to a halt in the evenings and at weekends.

The Rue du Bac and Saint Germain des Prés are about ten minutes’ walk away, through attractive little streets with a forgotten charm.

The main museums are close by.

The Assemblée Nationale metro station is just a few steps away.
