On arrival
Next door to the Hôtel des Grands Hommes, which is owned by the same company but has a completely different style, the entrance is marked by two small shrubs, whose greenness contrasts markedly with the wide expanse of pavement around the square.

The lobby, whose ceiling supports a large metal chandelier carrying several small lampshades in claret, leads on the left to reception and on the right to an extended light-filled lounge. With unsurpassed views of the Panthéon through its tall windows, the lounge is a spacious room with natural wood beams.

Its unfussy decor with period settees, brick fireplace with magnificent oak surround and traditionally-patterned fabric-clad walls, is set off by long, pale pink, striped curtains and trimmings in a brighter pink. Around the room are also large Chinese-style glazed vases.

The rooms
With their white-painted beams, period furniture and warm coloured fabric-clad walls, the rooms are both light and luxurious. A countryside theme is evident in the plant designs on the fabrics but the trellis panels on the wardrobes are more immediate reminders of a house in the country.

The personality of each room varies depending on the pattern of the wall fabric. From exotic fruits to myriads of flowers, the colours range from warm raspberry pink to wheat gold and on to clear blue. Bathrooms with enamelled tiles, large vases and period plumbing are pleasant and functional. With little space in the bedrooms to work or the ability to connect to the internet, you have to accept that these are rooms for leisure.

Types of room
The hotel offers two types of room: Standard and Superior. Standards overlook either the Rue Clotaire or a small courtyard, which makes them quieter. One of the Standards has its own rather odd but pleasant balcony accessed from … the bathroom.

Superiors have separate toilets, are slightly bigger but, more importantly, overlook the Panthéon. Most of them have two south-facing windows, wrought iron guard rail and window box. They are all light and airy and the view is outstanding: the Panthéon square, the College of Law, the library of Sainte Geneviève and the magnificent columns, pediment and cupola of the Panthéon itself.

Rooms on the second floor are more under the eaves and from these you can see right across the roof tops of Paris, picking out the top of  Notre Dame and of course Montmartre  and the Sacré Cœur. Rooms at the corners of the building have the advantages of views in two directions.

Breakfast
This is served in the room or in the cellar with its stone, vaulted roof. Self-service with hot drinks and breads and small pastries served at the table.
