No trip to Rome is complete without a visit to the Coliseum, where the immediate vicinity buzzes with traffic and an eclectic mix of tourists from throughout the world and tacky Roman soldiers whose good-humoured appearance and plastic weapons are part of another empire altogether.

However, move a little further away from this scene and you will rediscover local life as tourist restaurants give way to authentic Roman cuisine. The Hotel Gladiatori takes advantage of its proximity to such a magical monument but also offers a good number of other options, some of which are particularly unusual.

In addition to the Roman Forum, which stretches from the Coliseum to Capitole Hill, you can visit the monuments in the South West of the city, encompassing the ancient basilica of San Clemente, the prodigious San Giovannin in Laterano basilica or the Baths of Caracalla.

There are walks through the parks of Mont Celio or the little streets of the Rione Monti, around the Madonna dei Monti, a traditional quarter in the heart of Rome. Aventino Hill, offering beautiful views over the city, and the working class area of Testaccio, known both for its food and nightlight, are very close to the hotel.

With the Colosseo metro station right on your doorstep and a good number of buses passing along the Via Labicana, getting about Rome will be child’s play.
