On arrival
In the middle of what was originally a row of houses, its walls covered with flowering plants and window boxes, the entrance opens directly onto a small reception area. A wooden floor with rugs, engravings of wild animals, large flower arrangements and a beautiful period fireplace make this room charming and welcoming in its simplicity.

On either side of reception a corridor links the original houses together. On the right lies the Conservatory, a cosy sitting room with light-coloured walls, a terracotta floor, striped settees and engravings of fruit.

Protected from the glare of the sun by white blinds, the Conservatory overlooks a garden where a small fountain gently plays, surrounded by mosses and shrubs and white-painted patio furniture. To the left of reception is the Library, another cosy room with period fireplace, leather armchairs, bookcases and access to another garden, often reserved for receptions.

Each original house has been decorated in a slightly different way which is reflected in the choice of engravings whether these are flowers, fruit or animals or reproduction of paintings. Colours are generally light with a different main colour in each house: green, pale pink, gold or beige.

Many of the bedrooms have period fireplaces and the decor of matching carpet and unobtrusively designed wallpaper creates a cosy feel. Curtains and furniture too are light in colour. Beds are covered with duvets with scatter cushions at the foot.

By skilfully mixing reds and greens the effect is a style that foreign visitors would consider typically English. Bathrooms are functional with baths, white tiles on the walls and terracotta on the floor.

Types of room

There are three types of room: Single, Double and Deluxe and then Suites: Studio and Luxury. Although all rooms are equally comfortable with tea and coffee making facilities, CD player, TV, trouser press, and bottles of water left each evening, the difference is the room size.

Suites are naturally bigger and have a sitting area with a sofa bed, handy for families with young children. Luxury Suites have the additional use of a private garden. Rooms overlooking the gardens are quieter than those overlooking the street.

Several service are included in the room price – daily newspaper each morning, bottles of water left at night when the rooms are made ready, personalised business cards giving the hotel’s address, and a shoe shine service. Breakfasts are served on the bottom floor in a long room with pale wood flooring and blue-painted walls.
