Design Hotel London
London, city of the design hotels in Europe ?
Why not ?
After all, it's where Starck designed the Sanderson, seven years ahead of the others. It's also wher Sir Terence Conran did a wonderfull job with the Andaz, an old victorian building turned into a design hotel.
Proofs that in London, modernity could go hand in hand with the so british taste for adventure, to create new interior landscapes with an elegance we thought we could only find on Continental Europe.
Hospitality industry in London succeed in merging creativity, in terms of interior design, and comfort. And that was not so easy !
Different kind of design hotels can be found in London :
First category of design hotel in London :
the total glamour
Faced with the greyness of the city, the designers have created nests of sensuality and comfort. And what comes to mind is the Firmdale house. Tim and Kit Kemp have created in London in recent years, the most inventive collection of design hotels.
If the Blakes and the Hempel, both work of Anoushka Hempel, have lost ground since they've been sold, many other creators have given colors and their universe to the city. Among the latest, comes the Arch, whose hospitality is even more interesting than its design, and further to the east, comes the Boundary, created by Terence Conran.
Second category of design hotel in London :
the zen
Meeting in one place then in an another, horns, buses red "double deck" at breakneck speed, the "mind the gap, mind the gap" subway, or London cabs make (among others) the city a little stressful? The urban design hotels have understood this and carry you in a white & clean world. With the Hempel or St Martin's Lane, with the Zetter or the Metropolitan, one feels outside the city, in a world without aspérité or dangers, a world of white duvets and thick cushions.
Third category of design hotel in London :
the classical revamped
Stucked with traditions, London has the meaning of the four-poster bed. The fabrics are wool, carpets are thick, colors and motifs unalterable, windows and antique fireplace maintain the art of the chemney owing to the gas. In short, it is a design in which you feel good, sitting in a very Sherlock Holmes ambiance, lips glued to a cup of tea, watching the rain soak the city.
Fourth category of design hotels in London :
the specials
Irrelevant and original, some garnements drew hotels that retain the flavor of tradition, yet with a very contemporary twist. Filled with antiques, their design is glossy patina, faded colors and abundance of details. The people there are young, the atmosphere is relaxed and a bit alternative (but chic).
That said, they are not numerous:
- Miller's Residence - in Portobello / Notting Hill,
- The Hazltit's - in Soho,
- The Rookery - in Farringdon, between Angel and the City.
